What is Rosacea?

Rosacea is a common but often misunderstood skin condition that affects millions of people worldwide. It is estimated that 1 in 10 people suffer from rosacea.

It typically manifests as redness on the face, particularly on the cheeks, nose, chin, and forehead. It can also cause visible blood vessels, swelling, and in some cases, acne-like breakouts.

What causes Rosacea?

While the exact cause of rosacea is still unknown, it is believed to be triggered by a combination of genetic and environmental factors. Common triggers include exposure to sunlight, stress, hot beverages, spicy foods, alcohol, and certain skincare products.

An imbalance in female hormones, such as during perimenopause or menopause, has also been linked to a higher incidence of rosacea.

Who does Rosacea affect?

Rosacea mainly affects people between 30 and 55, although it can occur at any age. While rosacea affects both men and women, it is more frequently diagnosed in women, especially during menopause.

However, when men develop rosacea, they often experience more severe symptoms, particularly in cases where the skin thickens, such as in phymatous rosacea.

People with a family history of rosacea are also at a higher risk, suggesting a genetic component to the condition. Additionally, individuals with weakened immune systems or certain gastrointestinal conditions, like Helicobacter pylori infection, may be more prone to developing rosacea.

What does Rosacea look like?

People with rosacea often experience discomfort, such as redness and flushing of the skin along with dryness. This can be further compounded by a range of other symptoms including itching, burning/stinging sensations and spots in some cases.

Furthermore, eyes or nose may also become affected due to this relapsing condition which is prone to flare-ups over time varying in severity.

Common associated symptoms include:

  • Facial swelling
  • Visible Blood Vessels
  • Rough skin
  • Plaques (raised red patches) on your skin
  • Permanent redness
  • Irritated or swollen eyes
  • Enlarged nose
