The Importance of Skin Care

The skin is the largest organ of your body and is always exposed to elements that can be damaging, so it’s important to take care of it! As well, your skin is constantly working hard to perform a range of functions, including regulating your body temperature to fight off bacteria and germs.

In a recent blog, we discussed why you should use the best skin care products, as quality products are formulated with beneficial ingredients to suit a variety of skin types.

There are many reasons why it is important to look after your skin, but let’s look at some of the main ones:

Health

Your skin acts as a barrier to your internal systems, crucial to your health. It’s important to take care of your skin properly to make sure that this barrier is as strong as possible. You can become more prone to infection when your skin is dry or irritated, making it easier for cracks to appear.

Your skin also protects you from the sun, one of the biggest threats to your skin, which is why you should wear suncream every day, especially during the summer, as well as using facial products that contain SPF.

A skin care routine will also improve the appearance and texture of your skin, prevent clogged pores and breakouts, and protect you from environmental threats.

Self-confidence

Looking after your skin can help you look more youthful, boosting your self-confidence. As you get older, your skin cells don’t regenerate as often, so your skin can start to show signs of ageing, losing that youthful radiance. Quality skin care and regular skin treatments like facials will keep your skin looking clear and bright. Using the right skin care products will also help to remove any dead skin cells so that they reproduce into new cells, helping you to look and feel your best.

Prevention

Understanding your skin type and how to take care of it will prevent several conditions. People previously believed that it’s only important to prioritise consistent skin care if you have sensitive skin, but this theory is incorrect.

Many common skin conditions require specific skin care products and techniques like acne, eczema, psoriasis, rosacea, and more.

Not only is a routine with the right products important, but so is getting 7-8 hours of sleep every night, using SPF, maintaining a nutritious diet, and washing your hands regularly (and avoiding touching your face!).

The Different Types of Skin

Our doctors will help you understand your skin type, as there is “no one size fits all” approach to achieving healthier, more radiant skin. We can put together a bespoke treatment plan to help keep your skin in prime condition.

Your skin type is based on the amount of sebum (oil) that your skin produces. The oiliness of your skin can change over time and is also influenced by environmental factors, stress, genetics, hormones, ageing, and more. There are five primary skin types, combination, dry, normal, oily, and sensitive. Here is a breakdown:

Combination Skin

Combination skin involves two skin types, such as dry and normal skin around the chin and cheeks and oily skin around the T-zone. Having both skin types can make it more difficult to create a skincare routine. You will have to ensure you are treating all areas with different products to cater to the skin types, but we can help you with that!

Dry Skin

Dry skin has fewer natural oils and lacks moisture and lipids. This can cause the skin to appear dull and flaky, and sometimes even scaly, causing reactions such as burning and itching. Dry skin can also be more prone to the visibility of fine lines.

Dry skin tends to be more vulnerable to environmental influences like sunlight or cold winds. Our doctors can help find the best routine and products for your dry skin that are gentle, soothing, and hydrating, with ingredients such as ceramides that’ll help strengthen your skin’s protective barrier.

Normal Skin

If you have normal skin, you’ll likely have an even complexion with finer pores because your skin is neither too dry nor too oily. Even though you’re prone to fewer skin problems than other skin types, it’s still important to support the protective barrier.

We can recommend how often you cleanse and moisturise your face to help remove dirt and dead skin cells and reduce the risk of your skin type changes.

Oily Skin

Oily skin produces more sebum than other skin types, which is simply oil secretion from the sebaceous glands. If you have oily skin, your face will likely appear shinier and greasier, especially in the T-zone area. People with oily skin often have fewer wrinkles but are more prone to acne, blackheads, spots, and whiteheads, usually due to a genetic predisposition.

Even though oily skin produces more natural oils, that doesn’t mean your skin needs to be moisturised any less. It all comes down to understanding your skin type and choosing the right products to take care of your skin without clogging up your pores.

Sensitive Skin

Sensitive skin is known as a primary skin type, but you can still have dry, oily, and normal skin that’s sensitive! No matter what your skin type is, sensitivity can happen and may become red, dry, itchy, or patchy because of certain products you might be using and environmental factors. Sensitive skin usually requires more care than other skin types, as to maintain it, it must be calmed and strengthened for it to become more resistant.

Investing in your skin can help it stay protected and nourished, as well as keep it looking young and healthy. Here at Skin Excellence Clinics, we offer skin analysis to help identify your skin type and find the best regime or treatment for you.
