Are anti-wrinkle injections treatment safe?
Botulinum toxin is safe as a prescription-only medication, administered according to the needs of the patient by an appropriately-trained medical practitioner. If the procedure is performed correctly, the treatment will leave the patient able to show normal facial expressions but with a more relaxed, youthful appearance.
Due to its exceptional success rate, it remains the most popular cosmetic treatment and has been used safely for over 11 years, worldwide, on more than 1 million people.
However, over the years there have been many cases of bad and even dangerous practice using Anti-wrinkle injections, usually offered at a discount price by unskilled and unqualified ‘practitioners’ who do not act in the best interests of their patients. They may be offering ‘cheap’ anti-wrinkle injections treatments after obtaining the toxin illegally via the internet, even watering it down so that it is less effective. Worse still, they may by trying to force patients to have more areas treated than they need, creating unnatural results at a greater expense.
At Skin Excellence Clinics, you are safe in the knowledge that as a fully-qualified and experienced practitioner, Dr Strawford only uses genuine toxins available on prescription from reputable pharmacies in the UK.
So while you may find Anti-wrinkle injections treatments cheaper elsewhere, here you are guaranteed the expertise and skill of one of the leading cosmetic doctors in the UK.
Is the treatment painful?
The treatment involves a small number of carefully-placed injections, using very fine needles, to accurately target specific muscles in the face.
Most people tolerate the treatment well and describe the sensation of the injection as similar to plucking a hair.
How long does the treatment take?
Most anti-wrinkle injections procedures are completed in 20 to 30 minutes, depending on the size of the area treated and the number of injections.
Are there any side effects?
Immediately after treatment, you may notice small bumps and redness (like mosquito bites) in the treated area. These disappear very quickly, usually by the time you leave the clinic.
Some patients have reported slight bruising in the treated area, but this is rare.
How will I look when I leave the clinic?
The results of the treatment will be visible, to some extent, immediately. However, these will improve in the following 2 or 3 days.
It can take up to 2 weeks to see the maximum result.
How long do the effects of the treatment last?
For most patients, the results of the treatment last between 3 and 4 months.
For younger patients, and those who have regular wrinkle-relaxing injections, we often see results lasting up to 6 months.
Once I have had treatment and it wears off, will I look worse than I did before?
No. Anti-wrinkle injections temporarily relaxes the face muscles and prevents them from moving the overlying skin. When the treatment wears off, you will look the same as you did before the treatment… but with the benefit that, because your face muscles have not been able to crease your skin, the treatment has helped to prevent wrinkles from deepening.
For this reason, Anti-wrinkle injections can be used as a preventative treatment for people in their 20s and 30s, to prevent lines and wrinkles appearing in the first place. It can also maintain a natural lift of the brow, to prevent heaviness and hooding of the upper eyelids later in life.
If for any reason you were not fully satisfied with the results of the treatment, while the effects can’t be reversed (until the Anti-wrinkle injections wears off), you can always come back to the clinic for a top up.
Will I still be able to smile with my family and friends?
Dr Strawford specialises in the lighter, more natural-looking treatment that he and his patients prefer.
Our treatments help to soften the appearance of lines and wrinkles while preserving natural facial expression, including the ability to smile and raise your eyebrows.
Our motto at Skin Excellence Clinics, is “less is more”. The ‘frozen’ look that many people fear is often a result of treatment from a less-experienced and over-zealous practitioner.
Can Botox™ treatments be combined with other treatments?
At Skin Excellence Clinics we can combine Anti-wrinkle injections with other treatments to prevent or reverse the effects of ageing and thinning skin, such as wrinkles and loss of volume in the face.
We often use dermal fillers such as Ellanse™ and Sculptra™ in combination with Anti-wrinkle injections, for filling deeper lines, restoring volume and achieving a natural lift.
We can also help to improve skin texture, hydration, elasticity and fine lines with other treatments such as the Vampire Facial® (PRP), Fractora™, mesotherapy and skin boosters.
Please also ask us about the many skin care products available at the clinic, which are ideal for protecting and maintaining the health of your skin.
What other areas or conditions can anti-wrinkle injections be used for?
Anti-wrinkle injections are a medically-proven treatment for migraines and chronic headaches, and it is available to some patients through the NHS. Many of our patients benefit from anti-wrinkle injections injections for migraines and chronic headaches, both cosmetic reasons.
We also use anti-wrinkle injections to help reduce excessive sweating (hyperhidrosis), especially in the under arms, hands and forehead.
Anti-wrinkle injections can be very helpful in treating excessive activity in the neck muscle (platysma), which can result in neck bands and lines and what is know as a ‘turkey neck’. Combined with Silhouette Soft threads in the neck, we can achieve results similar those from neck lift surgery.
How much do treatments cost?
Prices at Skin Excellence Clinics start from £195 for one area.
Ageing skin is associated with the development of wrinkles, which are often unwanted and can be distressing.
Wrinkles develop over time, due to the loss of collagen in the skin. After repeated use of the facial muscles, these wrinkles become permanent lines and deep furrows.
The effects of sun damage, smoking and stress can exacerbate the problem.
Injecting tiny amounts of the botulinum toxin (in the form of the preparations Botox® or Azzalure™) into the muscles of the face can visibly smooth and soften lines and wrinkles. The injections temporarily relax the facial muscles, which helps to reduce the muscle contractions that cause lines and wrinkles to develop.
Wrinkle-relaxing injections are particularly effective on ‘dynamic’ lines – those caused by overactive muscle contraction – such as frown lines between the eyebrows, horizontal forehead lines, ‘crow’s feet’ or ‘laughter lines’, as well as correcting downturned mouths and neck lines. By weakening the depressor or frown muscles, there is often a ‘brow lift’; for people in their 40s and 50s, this can help to prevent heavy upper-eye bags.
Botox is also a recognised treatment for excessive sweating (hyperhidrosis) and for tension headaches and migraines.
